As you probably know, Best Price Oil is a “will-call” company (also known as an “on-demand” or C.O.D. company). This means that our Harrisburg, PA area customers are responsible for monitoring the amount of oil in their tanks and calling us for their deliveries.
While “will-call” oil delivery puts the customer in charge of their deliveries, it also involves a degree of vigilance in checking the tank. After all, the last thing you want is to run out of heating oil on days like we’ve experienced this winter.
How do I check my oil tank?”
There are two ways to check your tank:
1. The Tank Gauge Method (most common)
Most tanks have a clear plastic cube on top with a red marker or float.
- Locate: Look for the gauge on top of the tank.
- Read: The marker will show where your level is between full (F) and empty (E).
- Check Functionality: If the gauge is stuck or unreadable, gently press the float down to see if it pops back up.
2. The Dipstick Method (manual check)
If your gauge is broken or missing, you can use a clean stick or rod.
- Remove: Take off the inspection cap on top of the tank.
- Measure: Carefully insert a clean stick or measuring rod until it touches the bottom.
- Read: Withdraw the stick and check the wet mark to estimate the remaining oil.
In addition, modern oil tanks may have smart monitoring via app tracking – Wi-Fi-enabled sensors that send real-time data to your smartphone; or low-level alerts – through app, email, or text when it’s time to refill.
How do I know when to order a delivery?
If the level on your fuel tank is near or below 1/4 of the tank (tank gauge method) or when your tank level gets down to around the last 12 inches (dipstick method), it’s time to order your fuel right away. Your tank level should never be allowed to fall below these levels.
We recommend that you check your tank daily. You might want to put an alarm on your smartphone as a reminder.
